The 2026 UK CV Format Guide
What the best CVs look like this year, what ATS systems are rejecting, and five things most candidates are still doing wrong.
Why format is not a cosmetic decision
The way a CV is formatted determines whether it gets read at all. ATS systems parse CVs before a human ever sees them. A well-written CV in the wrong format will be misread, misranked, or rejected entirely before reaching the shortlisting stage.
7 seconds
Average time a UK recruiter spends on a CV at first pass. Format is what gets you past that window.
75%
Of CVs rejected by ATS before a human reads them across major UK employers.
2 pages
Maximum length for any UK CV regardless of career level. No exceptions in 2026.
Five CV format mistakes that cost candidates interviews
1. Two-column layouts
Stop doing this
Two-column CVs look polished in Word. They break completely in ATS parsing. The system reads left and right columns as one continuous text block, destroying the structure entirely.
Do this instead
Single-column layout only. Every section flows top to bottom. Clean, readable, ATS-safe.
2. Tables for layout
Stop doing this
Tables in CV bodies confuse ATS systems. Content inside table cells is often skipped entirely or jumbled into unreadable strings.
Do this instead
Standard paragraph and bullet formatting. No tables except where genuinely necessary for data presentation.
3. Headers and footers for contact details
Stop doing this
Putting your name, phone, and email in the document header looks tidy in Word but many ATS systems do not read header/footer content. Your contact details may simply not exist as far as the system is concerned.
Do this instead
All contact details in the main body of the CV, at the top of page one, in plain text.
4. Graphics, icons, and profile photos
Stop doing this
Icons next to section headings, skill bar graphics, profile photos, and decorative elements all cause ATS parsing failures and add no value to a human reader with 7 seconds on the page.
Do this instead
Text only. Section headings in bold. Consistent formatting throughout.
5. Functional CV format
Stop doing this
The functional CV (skills-first, chronological history buried or omitted) is widely used by career changers and candidates with gaps. UK recruiters and ATS systems distrust it. It signals something is being hidden.
Do this instead
Reverse-chronological format with a strong profile and achievement-led bullets. Address gaps directly in the profile.
What a strong 2026 UK CV actually contains
Single column, clean margins
12mm minimum margins. 10-11pt body text. 14-16pt name. Consistent font throughout. No decorative elements.
Contact details in plain text at the top
Name, phone, email, LinkedIn, city only. No date of birth, nationality, photo, or marital status.
A targeted professional profile
3-5 sentences. Names target role, strongest skills, and most compelling achievement. Written for the employer, not about you.
Achievement-led experience section
4-6 bullets per recent role, 2-3 for older ones. Strong verbs. At least half contain a number or scale.
A relevant skills section
Hard skills only. Specific tools, software, methodologies. 8-10 items maximum. No soft skills listed.
Education last for experienced candidates
Qualification, institution, year, grade if strong. No primary school. No GCSE list if degree-qualified.
How format changes at different career levels
Graduate and entry-level
One page. Education prominent. Part-time work framed as transferable skills. Projects included if they add evidence.
Mid-career professional
One to two pages. Profile leads. Experience dominant. Education at the bottom. Two pages acceptable with 5+ years experience.
Senior and executive
Two pages maximum. Profile frames leadership narrative. Roles 15+ years ago get one or two lines each. LinkedIn URL essential at this level.
How to save and send your CV
Save as PDF, not Word
PDF preserves formatting exactly. Exception: follow job advert instructions if Word is specifically requested.
Name the file correctly
Firstname-Lastname-CV.pdf, not "CV Final v3 NEW (2).docx". File name is the first impression before the document opens.
Check the PDF is text-based
Open it and try to select text. If you cannot select text, the PDF is a scan or image and ATS systems cannot read it. Recreate the document.
